Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion - The Body Clinic Day Spa
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, non-chemical treatment performed by a skincare professional to help smooth skin, unclog pores, and reveal a more radiant glow. A microdermabrasion treatment exfoliates the skin’s uppermost layer, revealing newer, healthier skin. Due to the gentle nature of this treatment, there is generally no down time post procedure.
WHAT IS MICRODERMABRASION?
Performed by a skincare professional, microdermabrasion uses a special tip to “sand”, or exfoliate the uppermost layer of skin in order to help improve skin’s appearance. Microdermabrasion is a pain-free and quick procedure that mainly helps improve the texture and overall glow of skin, but can also help improve the appearance of fine lines, skin discoloration, enlarged pores, and scars caused by acne.
There are several types of microdermabrasion including crystal and diamond tip. Crystal microdermabrasion is performed using a small tip that disperses a powerful stream of small, exfoliating crystals (usually aluminum or magnesium oxide) onto the skin, while simultaneously vacuuming them off. The diamond tip method uses an exfoliating disc that combined with suction moves in a methodical pattern over the skin.
The depth and degree of exfoliation that one receives from microdermabrasion depends on many factors, including the type of tip used, the speed, and the pressure applied by the professional. Microdermabrasion is commonly performed on all skin types, but it is always best to consult your physician or a skincare professional before receiving treatment.
WHO IS MICRODERMABRASION FOR?
Due to the gentle nature of the treatments, microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin types and helps to improve fine lines, rough skin texture, and clogged pores. However, it is always best to work with your skincare professional before booking a treatment so you can discuss your specific skin concerns and develop a personalized treatment plan.
Since microdermabrasion treatments do not use acids, they can be a great alternative to chemical peels.
HOW DOES MICRODERMABRASION WORK?
Microdermabrasion exfoliates the outermost layer of skin, removing dead skin cells while unclogging pores. Although microdermabrasion is often compared with chemical-based skin resurfacers, such as glycolic peels, microdermabrasion works through an entirely different mechanism. While chemical peels work to dissolve cellular cohesions to release dead skin cells, microdermabrasion mechanically polishes the skin by dispersing tiny exfoliating crystals onto the skin, while simultaneously vacuuming them off. Results are often seen immediately after the treatment.
When receiving a microdermabrasion treatment, be sure to consult with your physician in regards to the best at home regimen for both pre and post-treatment.
WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE DURING A MICRODERMABRASION TREATMENT?
Microdermabrasion is generally mild in pressure and is therefore very gentle on the skin, although some people do experience a slight stinging sensation from the crystals used to exfoliate the skin.
Results are often seen immediately after the treatment which is what makes this such a popular procedure. While most microdermabrasion treatments require little-to-no downtime, direct sun exposure should be minimized and it is essential to apply a broad spectrum sunscreen daily after your procedure. Always consult your skincare professional about your post-procedure regimen.
WHEN SHOULD I GET MICRODERMABRASION?
When you should go in for a microdermabrasion treatment varies depending on the depth of the treatment. A mild treatment can be performed year round, as there is little-to-no downtime associated with the procedure. If you are getting a deeper treatment, for more aggressive skin retexturing, it is best to do so in the winter months.
Microdermabrasion is usually performed in a series of 6 treatments, 2-3 weeks apart. Depending on your desired outcome, your skincare professional will customize a treatment plan that takes into account your skin types and concerns.
